LAB Faculty and Student Fellows for 2025-26


Reshmi Dutt-Ballerstadt

LAB Director

Reshmi Dutt-Ballerstadt is the Edith Green Distinguished Professor in the English department at 探花直播 and directs the “Critical Ethnic Studies” program.  She teaches in the areas of postcolonial studies, transnational feminisms, and minority discourses. Dutt-Ballerstadt is the author of The  (2010) and is the lead editor of  (2021). Her scholarship and creative writing are widely published and circulated in various literary and scholarly journals.  Dutt-Ballerstadt also serves as the editor for Inside Higher Ed’s column “Conditionally Accepted,” a column for marginalized faculty in higher education and the co-editor of Truthout’s column “The Corporate University.” She is also a mentor-editor for the national "."


Robin Barklis

Faculty Fellow, 2025-26

Robin Barklis teaches political theory, law and comparative politics in the Department of Political Science at 探花直播, and directs Linfield’s program in Law, Rights, and Justice. His teaching and research interests are in contemporary political theory and philosophy, the history of ideas, and public law, with focusses on political identity, nationalism, transitional justice, truth and reconciliation, and public memory. His current research examines the relationship between public remembrance, belonging, and the pursuit of justice in societies grappling with enduring histories of large-scale or systematic injustice and atrocity.


Kurt Ingeman

Faculty Fellow, 2025-26

Dr. Kurt Ingeman is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies whose professional mission is to teach and conduct rigorous science in support of species recovery in a complex, interconnected, and rapidly changing world. As an aquatic ecologist, he has developed research projects informing the conservation of iconic species such as chinook salmon, Northwestern pond turtles, and freshwater mussels, all within the working landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. He serves on the board of the Greater Yamhill Watershed Council and co-founded an interdisciplinary collaboration that re-examines the histories of conservation spaces through the lens of place names. At Linfield, Dr. Ingeman teaches introductory and upper division courses in environmental science and serves as the faculty advisor for the Linfield Environmental Club. He has also been employed as a wildlife tech, environmental consultant, and research ecologist, but he is thrilled to be back with students in the classroom, the lab, and the field.


Jackie Leung

Faculty Fellow, 2025-26

Jackie Leung (she/they), JD, MS, is an Assistant Professor of Public Health at 探花直播 and the Executive Director of the Micronesian Islander Community (MIC), a nonprofit based in Oregon. Jackie’s background is in public health policy and advocacy, food systems research, and engaging in community health work. Her interests include examining traditional birth practices, chronic diseases, and improving health outcomes for Micronesians. She serves in several leadership positions: commissioner with the Oregon Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs, a Traditional Health Worker representative on the Oregon Maternal Mortality & Morbidity Committee, and a member of the Public Health Advisory Board. In her spare time, Jackie participates in dragon boat racing, spends time with her family and dog, and takes long scenic drives along the coast and through the agricultural landscapes that make Oregon the beauty it is today.


Rachel Norman

Faculty Fellow, 2025-26

Rachel Norman is an associate professor of English and Ethnic Studies and the director of the writing program. This year at Linfield, she is offering courses on introductory literature, ethnicity in graphic novels, and tragedy in global film. Her scholarship appears in journals such as American Quarterly, South Atlantic Review, Encyclopedia of Women and Islamic Cultures, and Amerasia. She is the recipient of grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Modern Languages Association, and others. She is a past board member for the Arab American Studies Association.


Evan Shenkin

Faculty Fellow, 2025-26

Evan Shenkin joined the Linfield faculty in 2022. His research focuses on Indigenous community land and sovereignty struggles in the eastern lowlands of the Bolivian Amazon. He also studies social movements for environmental justice through a variety of topics, including community opposition to landfills, fossil fuel divestment campaigns and alternative development paradigms such as renewable energy and transportation (solar, wind, and sail), as well as gender equity and human rights.


Jemma Casem

Student Fellow

Jemma Casem (they/she) is a sophomore and first-generation student at 探花直播. They are a creative writing major and theatre minor. In her free time, she enjoys arts and crafts and watching horror films. They are excited to be a part of the LAB team and to be involved with organizing events.


Alondra Briseño Monje

Student Fellow

Alondra Briseño Monje is a freshman and a first-generation student at 探花直播. She is a digital art major and management minor. Outside of school, she enjoys listening to music, drawing, and taking long rides with good company. She is excited to be working with the LAB team and contributing with her creative ideas as a designer as well as helping promote all events and programs sponsored by LAB.

Jackson B. Miller

Faculty Fellow, 2024-25

Dr. Jackson B. Miller is a professor of communication arts who teaches, researches and creates projects focusing on protest and reform rhetoric, multicultural communication, persuasion, and nonverbal communication. He leads the Linfield Forensics (speech and debate) Team, hosts debate trainings and competitions for national and international audiences, and regularly facilitates workshops on inclusive communication practices for a variety of community and professional organizations.


Sonia Ticas

Faculty Fellow, 2024-25

Prof. Sonia Ticas teaches Spanish language at all levels and culture in the Global Languages and Cultural Studies Department through courses such as film, revolutionary women, and Mesoamerican societies. She has taken Linfield students abroad to Costa Rica, Mexico, Spain and Morocco for language and cultural immersion. A native of El Salvador, Prof. Ticas migrated to the United States as an adolescent and experienced multiple displacements living in Los Angeles and attending various public schools. These experiences are featured in her memoir in progress and in a series of poems published in Label me Latino/a. Her extensive professional work is reflected in poetry translations from Spanish into English of Costa Rican poet, Eunice Odio; academic articles on women writers; and the history of female suffrage in Central America. Her book, Feminist Paths, on feminism and suffrage in El Salvador is forthcoming.


Abby Thomas

LAB Multicultural Programs Fellow

Abby Thomas is a Linfield alum who now serves as the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Programs, where she supports campus inclusion clubs, as well as the First Scholars mentoring program. She enjoys reading, hiking, and taking her paddle board out when she's not working!


Katie Higinbotham

LAB Inquiry Seminar Fellow

Katie Higinbotham is a writing instructor and the Associate Director of the Writing Program at 探花直播. She earned her MFA from Western Washington University, where she was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Writer Award for her multi-genre work in nonfiction and poetry. Katie especially loves working with beginning writers at Linfield in both INQS and literature courses. Her latest creative projects explore the intersections of music and activism, phobia and nature, and moving through the world as a runner.


Maja Stachurska

Student Social Media Fellow

Maja Stachurska is a freshman and a first-generation student at Linfield University. She is planning on studying business and marketing, but also enjoys reading, listening to music, and being outside. She is super excited to be working with the LAB team and promoting all the events and programs sponsored by LAB.

Sofia Paredes Quijano

Student Fellow

Sofia Paredes Quijano is a sophomore and first-generation student at 探花直播. She is majoring in Law, Rights, & Justice and is double majoring in Spanish. She is proud to be Ecuadorian and Salvadorian. She enjoys cooking and going on walks with her dog. She is excited to be a part of LAB and opening conversations about immigration and the Latino community.
